In addition to maternal and neonatal, health, family planning and other aspects of reproductive health, sexual health is key. Both HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have a dramatic impact on the social and economic circumstances of both individuals and societies. Improvements in sexual and reproductive health require more than a biomedical response; effective responses focus to gender roles, identities, social norms, values and address deep taboos. These factors all contribute substantially to the type of interventions that health managers and professionals need to provide.
The module explores the causes, consequences and patterns of across a range of SRH issues: sexual health, family planning, infertility, antenatal, perinatal, postpartum health, newborn health, abortion, adolescent health, gender-based violence and HIV.
The module also explores key considerations for SRHR and HIV policy and practice: such as gender; rights-based approaches; sexuality; stigma and discrimination; and ethics. Participants will explore their own norms and values in relation to sexuality and the way these drive the problems and the response to the problems. Specific attention will be provided to groups that are not sufficiently reached by SRH services, such as adolescents and people with disabilities.
